Firefighter is best in U.S.
Mahoning Township volunteer encourages other women

MAHONING TWP. —Leslie Young has a message for women who are thinking of becoming a firefighter: Just do it.
After all, it’s worked out fairly well for her.
Young was recently named American Legion Firefighter of the Year.
The Mahoning Township deputy fire chief found out via letter Tuesday that she’s been named the Legion’s top firefighter in the nation.
“It’s a little bit unbelievable, actually,” she said. “Even now it’s hard to comprehend how big this actually is.”
She was named the Legion’s state Firefighter of the Year in February, won the Northeast Region title, and was one of five finalists for the national award.
‘Just do it’
Young, 41, said the honor is that her fellow firefighters thought enough of her to nominate her for the distinction.
Not one to shy away from entering burning buildings or mangled vehicles to free occupants, Young said she just likes helping people.
“Someone is having the worst day of their life, and hopefully I can help make it a little better,” she said about responding to emergency calls. “Even if a home is completely destroyed, maybe I can save a memento or heirloom that means a lot to them.”
She doesn’t consider the risk when entering a burning building.
“When there’s a job to do, I just do it,” she added. “That’s what we train for.
“If my house was on fire, or I was in a vehicle accident, I’d want someone to come help me.”
Young said volunteering with the department takes up a lot of time, but she’ll probably be there until she dies.
‘Can’t keep me out’
She started volunteering at East End Fire Co. while dating her now husband, Kevin, also a firefighter and former chief in Mahoning.
She got roped into participating in a training exercise and was hooked ever since.
Young recalls saying that she would train to be a firefighter, but that she would never go into a burning building.
“Now they can’t keep me out.”
Her husband has been her biggest mentor and helper along the way, she says.
‘My share’
Young joined the department as a firefighter 16 years ago when women weren’t accepted as much as they are today.
She said she never got any flak locally, but heard comments at training sessions out of town in her early days.
Young recalled a class in Harrisburg where a firefighter rolled his eyes and said, “Great, we got the girl” when he was paired up with her to enter a simulated burning building.
That man had an asthma attack and couldn’t finish the exercise.
Young did.
She said women, just as men, must have certain physical capabilities to work as firefighters. But women should not shy away just because of their gender.
“Yes, men are physically stronger, but I can still do my share of the work.”
To Houston
The American Legion said the award is given to “a firefighter who has exceeded the requirements expected of his or her position and has shown a distinct pattern of community service and professional achievement.”
Young will receive the award at the national American Legion convention this August in Houston.
Her airfare, a night’s hotel stay, and the banquet will be paid for by the Legion for her and her husband.
If she can take more time off from her job as a radiation safety technician at Geisinger, she may stay a few days.
